Local Senator calls for increased pension in Budget 2027

The calls come with the growing concern regarding the cost of living ahead of the budget, particularly for old-age pensioners.

A local Senator has supported calls for the state pension to increase by €15 in the upcoming budget for 2027.

Groups like Social Justice Ireland have called on the government to increase both the State Contributory and Non-Contributory Pensions by €15 per week, starting in January 2027 at an additional cost of €570m in Budget 2027.

The calls come with the growing concern regarding the cost of living ahead of the budget, particularly for old-age pensioners.

Fine Gael Senator Joe O'Reilly believes that a €15 increase is "reasonable", noting that the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste are opting for a targeted approach to supports rather than universal one-off payments.

Speaking to Northern Sound, the Cavan native said the objective of the budget will be to support "those in need".
