Kompany among Ballon d’Or Men’s Coach of the Year nominees

The five nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or Men’s Coach of the Year award were announced on Tuesday, with Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany among them.

Kompany, who led Bayern to the German double and the Champions League semi-finals, faces competition from Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, Spain’s Luis de la Fuente, PSG’s Luis Enrique and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery.

Arteta won the Premier League with Arsenal, De la Fuente guided Spain to the 2026 World Cup, Enrique led PSG to the Ligue 1 title and Champions League glory, while Emery won the Europa League with Aston Villa and guided the club to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

Explaining Kompany's nomination, the Ballon d’Or website wrote:

"When Vincent Kompany arrived at Säbener Straße, sceptics questioned whether the former Burnley manager possessed the credentials to lead Germany's biggest club. Two seasons later, those doubts have been thoroughly erased when Kompany guided Bayern Munich to their 35th Bundesliga crown in breathtaking fashion, securing his second consecutive league title.

"Beyond their domestic sweep and Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund, Kompany's team proved their mettle on the European stage, eliminating 15-time champions Real Madrid in a dramatic 6-4 aggregate Champions League quarter-final before narrowly falling to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.

“With a Ballon d'Or best coach nomination recognizing his elite status among world football's managerial elite, Kompany remains unsated. As Bayern set their sights on further glory, the Belgian manager has built a mentality and tactical identity capable of dominating European football for years to come.”
